Stage 3
Growth and Survival of Living Things
Students will use their “Working Scientifically” skills to undertake observations and tests to examine environmental conditions, and will be given an introduction to Living Seawalls to gain an understanding of how humans can contribute to creating environments suitable for the survival of living things. Schools will need their own transport to travel between sites. This excursion is run in partnership with the Sydney Institute of Marine Science and Living Seawalls. See more details... |
Secondary
Marine and Aquaculture Elective
Marine and Civil Engineering Students will explore displays to understand a range of marine infrastructure solutions and undertake quadrat sampling of Living Seawalls to gain an understanding of biodiversity enhancement. Location: Clontarf and the Sydney Institute of Marine Science. School will need to organise their own transport. Timing of this excursion is tide dependent. This excursion is run in partnership with the Sydney Institute of Marine Science and Living Seawalls. See more details... |
Stage 5 Geography
Environmental Change and Management

This excursion will take place at, and is run in partnership with the Sydney Institute of Marine Science, Chowder Bay. See more details... |
Stage 6 Marine Studies
Students will be provided with an introduction to Marine Studies as a discipline. They will hear from marine experts about their research and projects, access a touch tank to investigate classification of marine organisms, investigate marine food chains and food webs and species adaptations.
This excursion will take place at, and is run in partnership with the Sydney Institute of Marine Science. See more details... |
Stage 6 Marine Studies
Estuarine Studies
Students will learn about pressure being placed on estuaries due to human activities and structures, actions to reduce human impacts, and explore maps of features of the Sydney Harbour estuary. They will experience hands on activities to explore marine life in the estuary, hear from expert marine scientists about management their research and projects. This excursion will take place at, and run in partnership with the Sydney Institute of Marine Science, Chowder Bay. See more details... |
Stage 6 Geography
Geographical Investigation
Students will be led through how to iterate ideas for research, develop a plan for inquiry, consider ethical issues, collect primary data, process secondary data and present findings and propose recommendations. This is an ideal session to run at the beginning of Year 11 to assit students as they begin planning their Geographic Inquiry. This excursion takes place at Chowder Bay, but could also be delivered at another site closer to your school. See more detail... |
Stage 6 Marine Studies & Geography
Ecosystems and Global Biodiversity
Students will learn about corals, their formation and the interactions within them; threats to coral reefs including climate change, and actions to reduce human impacts. They will experience hands on activities to explore marine life, hear from expert marine scientists about their research and projects. This excursion will take place at, and is run in partnership with the Sydney Institute of Marine Science, Chowder Bay. See more details... |
Stage 6 Geography
Ecosystems and Global Biodiversity
Students will use a range of maps, graphs and visual representations to explore spatial patterns of kelp forests; and diagrams and displays to explore the dynamics of ecosystem functioning. Students will hear a presentation about Operation Crayweed, sea urchin removal processes learn about animal tracking and how to evaluate management strategies in the HSC exam. (1 and a half hour session). This excursion is run in partnerhip with the Sydney Institute of Marine Science. See more detail... |
Stage 6 Geography
Rural and Urban Places
This excursion explores the urban precinct of Darling Harbour - parts of Pyrmont-Ultimo, Darling Square, Cockle Bay, Barangaroo and Walsh Bay. The transformation of the area's physical environment through urban renewal and redevelopment initiatives has seen it change from an industrial port to a vibrant cultural hub. Cultural diversity and demographic shifts have shaped its social fabric. The precinct has experienced an economic evolution from maritime trade to a mixed-use zone including residential, commercial and entertainment sectors Sustainability initiatives have been incorporated into renewal projects such as green building practices, renewable energy integration, innovative waste and water management strategies, ecological restoration, climate change adaptation, community engagement and accessibility design.
