Stage 3
Growth and Survival of Living Things
Students will use their “Working Scientifically” skills to undertake observations and tests to examine environmental conditions, and will be given an introduction to Living Seawalls to gain an understanding of how humans can contribute to creating environments suitable for the survival of living things. Clontarf and/or Chowder Bay Schools will need their own transport to travel between sites. This excursion is run in partnership with Living Seawalls. See more details... |

Marine and Aquaculture Elective
Marine and Civil Engineering Students will explore displays to understand a range of marine infrastructure solutions and undertake quadrat sampling of Living Seawalls to gain an understanding of biodiversity enhancement. Location: Clontarf and/or Chowder Bay Schools will need to organise their own transport. Timing of this excursion is tide dependent. This excursion is run in partnership with Living Seawalls. Environmental Change and Management
Students will learn about geological history, fluvial processes, tides and currents influencing Sydney Harbour estuary; identify organisms in the intertidal zone, explore human impacts on foreshores and undertake a range of fieldwork techniques to collect data about environmental change and management. Stage 6 Marine Studies
Students will be provided with an introduction to Marine Studies as a discipline. They will hear about the research and projects undertaken at the Sydney Institute of Marine Science, investigate classification of marine organisms, investigate marine food chains and food webs and species adaptations.

Estuarine Studies
Students will learn about pressure being placed on estuaries due to human activities and structures, actions to reduce human impacts, and explore maps of features of the Sydney Harbour estuary. They will experience hands on activities to explore marine life in the estuary, learn about management and contemporary research and innovations implemented to manage Sydney estuary. Stage 6 Geography
Geographical Investigation
Students will be led through how to iterate ideas for research, develop a plan for inquiry, consider ethical issues, collect primary data, process secondary data and present findings and propose recommendations. This is an ideal session to run at the beginning of Year 11 to assit students as they begin planning their Geographic Inquiry. Ecosystems and Global Biodiversity
Students will undertake fieldwork to investigate kelp forests, use a range of maps, graphs and visual representations to explore spatial patterns of kelp forests; and diagrams to explore the dynamics of ecosystem functioning. Students will hear about ecosystem restoration projects, sea urchin removal processes, learn how oceanic data is collected, and how to evaluate management strategies in the HSC exam. Rural and Urban Places
This excursion explores the urban precinct of Darling Harbour - parts of Pyrmont-Ultimo, Darling Square, Cockle Bay, Barangaroo and Walsh Bay. The transformation of the area's physical environment through urban renewal and redevelopment initiatives has seen it change from an industrial port to a vibrant cultural hub. Cultural diversity and demographic shifts have shaped its social fabric. The precinct has experienced an economic evolution from maritime trade to a mixed-use zone including residential, commercial and entertainment sectors Sustainability initiatives have been incorporated into renewal projects such as green building practices, renewable energy integration, innovative waste and water management strategies, ecological restoration, climate change adaptation, community engagement and accessibility design.
