Australian Marine Science Association 2026 Conference
Topic: Exploring Practical, Fieldwork-based School Education Programs that Embed Ocean Literacy Through Explicit Syllabus Links in Secondary Geography, Marine Studies and STEM. This presentation explores ocean literacy programs designed for school students. It explores, how engagement in ocean literacy by teachers and students can be enhanced by providing comprehensive programs that integrate quality text and digital resources, fieldwork-based experiences, inter-school collaborations and cross-curriculum projects. An over-crowded curriculum is one of the barriers to embedding ocean literacy in Australian schools. Explicitly linking ocean literacy principles to existing syllabuses across a range of subjects, rather than adding additional content is essential. Subjects such as Geography and STEM provide ideal opportunities to embed ocean literacy alongside Science and Marine Studies. Practical, hands-on fieldwork experiences provide students with an opportunity to connect with subject content beyond the classroom. Addressing mandatory syllabus components such as fieldwork, research and inquiry processes, and communication syllabus outcomes, particularly in subjects with external examinations, provides an additional incentive for teachers to engage with ocean literacy programs. Engaging and authentic marine science fieldwork experiences and case studies are enhanced by partnerships between educators, marine scientists and local conservation and restoration projects. Location: Canberra Date: 30 August - 3 September |

Blue Schools Australia Network
|
If your school undertakes, or has undertaken, a practical project to engage students in learning about the ocean, harbours or local waterways, you should consider joining the Blue Schools Australia Network.
Aims of the Blue School Australia Network are: to improve ocean literacy; to promote school projects which engage students with the ocean, harbours or local waterways; to improve understanding about the blue economy and opportunities for students to engage with it. |
Interested schools and individuals should be committed to engaging students in projects to facilitate learning about issues such as water quality, aquatic and intertidal ecosystems, the interconnectedness between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, aquatic ecosystem restoration, catchment management, etc.
|
Schools should be open to exploring the Blue Schools concept more fully, with the possibility of more formalised structures and standards for Blue Schools in the future.
