Kelp Forests - Stage 6 Geography

Students will undertake fieldwork to investigate kelp forests, use a range of maps, graphs and visual representations to explore spatial patterns of kelp forests; and diagrams to explore the dynamics of ecosystem functioning. Students will hear about ecosystem restoration projects, sea urchin removal processes, learn how oceanic data is collected, and how to evaluate management strategies in the HSC exam. Syllabus Content
Investigation of an ecosystem (Kelp Forests)
Fieldwork
Students will: - learn about how to undertake eDNA testing and access eDNA results to learn about biodiversity. - learn about how to undertake a plankton drag to learn about ecosystem productivity - undertake biodiversity surveys using underwater cameras and digital tools. - undertake water testing - including how to use a sechi disk, turbidity tube, and water testing kit - undertake a beach wrack investigation |
A 2 hour snorkel can be incorporated into this excursion (if the date is available), which will be provided by an external provider at an additional cost.
Kelp Forest - Great Southern Reef Incursion - In-class presentation
If you are unable to complete a Kelp Forest excursion, you may like to book a Kelp Forest - Great Southern Reef Incursion. This is an excellent option to extend your students.
This in-class presentation will address human-induced modifications, responses and strategies implemented and the role of research and innovation in effective management of the Great Southern Reef. It will include a discussion of techniques used to assess health of the reef and fieldwork undertaken to assess the effectiveness of management strategies and ecosystem restoration efforts.
Incursions are delivered onsite at your school in the Sydney Metropolitan area.
Cost: $300 for up to 40 students. 2 hour session.
