Kelp Forests - Stage 6 Geography
Students will use a range of maps, graphs and visual representations to explore spatial patterns of kelp forests; and diagrams and displays to explore the dynamics of ecosystem functioning. Students will hear a presentation about Operation Crayweed, sea urchin removal processes learn about animal tracking and how to evaluate management strategies in the HSC exam.
This excursion is run in partnership with the Sydney Institute of Marine Science. (1 and a half hour session). |
Syllabus Content
Investigation of an ecosystem (Kelp Forests)
- The characteristics of the ecosystem, including its spatial pattern and the nature of its biodiversity
- The dynamics of ecosystem functioning, including vulnerability, resilience and ecological disturbance
- Human-induced modifications to the ecosystem
- Responses and strategies, including for maintaining ecosystem functioning and actions for sustainability
- Differences in ecosystem management, compared with at least one other location, due to economic, political and sociocultural factors
