Living Seawalls - STEM Program and Excursion
This programs involves cross-curriculum learning across Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths to enrich high performing and gifted students. Learning is designed to be developed over a term or several weeks, where students learn about environmental issues impacting on coasts, harbours and rivers, and how eco-engineering solutions can provide solutions that enhance biodiversity alongside human structures. Options available for an additional art workshop to create a STEAM program.
Students will undertake inquiry-based learning to explore impacts of human activities on coasts, harbours and rivers. They will visit a Living Seawalls and/or Living Boulders installation to see an example of eco-engineering and will undertake quadrat sampling and environmental testing and observations to gain an understanding of habitat enhancement. Timing of this excursion is tide dependent. Supplementary presentations on Living Seawalls and art workshops are available as part of this program. In class, student can undertake a project to develop their own eco-engineering solutions to environmental problems. The Living Seawalls excursion takes place at Clontarf.
